What Kinds of Plates Are Available in Montana?

When registering your vehicle, you may choose from dozens of different plate options, depending on eligibility. These include:
- Standard Plates: 5 distinct standard options.
- Specialty / Sponsored Plates: Give your vehicle a custom look and choose from hundreds of uniquely aesthetic license plates associated with different Montana organizations or causes. Additional fees apply.
- Personalized / Vanity Plates: Custom letter/number combinations to reflect your style or brand. Extra cost applies.
- Permanent Plates: For light vehicles 11 years old or more; no annual renewals needed. Contact us to determine eligibility.
Permanent Registration: A Major Benefit for Older Vehicles
Many vehicles that are at least 11 years old can be registered on a permanent basis in Montana. There are zero recurring annual vehicle registration renewal costs after a vehicle is permanently registered (if eligible). A “PERM” tab replaces yearly stickers/tabs once permanent status is granted.
